There is no right or wrong way to be a witch—your practice should reflect what resonates with you. Witchcraft is a deeply personal and diverse path, offering countless ways to connect with the natural world, energy, and personal intuition. Beyond paths like green witchcraft, kitchen witchcraft, hedge witchcraft, and lunar witchcraft, there are many more approaches to explore.

You might be drawn to elemental witchcraft, connecting with the elements of earth, air, fire, and water; or cosmic witchcraft, working with celestial bodies and astrology. Some practise divination through tarot, runes, or scrying, while others focus on ancestral work, shadow work, or energy healing. Tech witchcraft integrates modern technology into spells and rituals, while eclectic witchcraft combines elements from multiple traditions to create a unique, personalised path.

Spells & Rituals for Beginners

One of the most exciting parts of witchcraft is performing spells and rituals. These practices help manifest intentions, bring clarity, and deepen your connection to the craft.

Candle Magic

For your first candle magic, give this a try: choose a candle colour that aligns with your goal—each colour carries its own energy and symbolism. For example, green can represent growth and abundance, while red is often linked to passion and strength. Once you’ve selected your candle, take a moment to set your intention clearly in your mind. As you light the candle, focus on this intention, visualising your goal manifesting. Then, meditate on the flame, watching how it moves and allowing it to guide your thoughts. This simple practice can be a powerful way to connect with your desires and direct your energy.

If you’re looking for more ideas or want to deepen your understanding, feel free to explore some of the other candle magic posts I’ve written. There’s plenty to discover to help you shape your own unique practice.

For your first sigil creation, start by thinking clearly about your desire or intention. Transform this into a unique symbol that feels personal and meaningful to you—this is your sigil. Once you’ve created it, focus on charging it with energy. This can be done through meditation, visualisation, or even by holding it during a moment of strong emotion. When you feel the sigil is fully charged, incorporate it into your spellwork. You might carve it into a candle, draw it on paper, or visualise it during rituals. This process helps to align your energy with your intention, empowering your magic.

For your first herbal sachet, choose a small bag and fill it with herbs that align with your intention. For example, lavender is perfect for promoting peace and calm, while rosemary is known for protection. As you add each herb, focus on your goal, visualising its energy blending into the mix. Once your sachet is complete, keep it with you—carry it in your pocket, place it under your pillow, or keep it on your altar to let its energy support you.

For simple salt protection, sprinkle salt at entryways, windowsills, or around your home to create a protective barrier that wards off negative energy. For added strength, black salt—often made by mixing salt with ashes or charcoal—can be carried with you in a small pouch or sprinkled in areas where you feel the need for extra spiritual protection. As you place the salt, focus on your intention, visualising it forming a shield of safety around you and your space.

For a simple new moon manifestation ritual, begin by writing down your desires and intentions on a piece of paper. Focus on what you wish to invite into your life, keeping your thoughts clear and positive. Once you’ve finished, safely burn the paper—using a fireproof dish or cauldron—while visualising your intentions being released into the universe. As the smoke rises, imagine your desires taking shape and moving towards manifestation.

For a full moon cleansing ritual, begin by placing your crystals outside or on a windowsill where they can bathe in the moonlight. Allow the full moon’s energy to recharge and cleanse them. While your crystals are soaking in the moonlight, take the time to cleanse your space—sweeping away any stagnant energy or negativity. You might use sage, palo santo, or simply open the windows to let fresh energy flow through. As you do this, visualise any negative energy being released and replaced by light and positivity.

For a grounding ritual, stand barefoot on the earth, allowing your feet to connect fully with the ground beneath you. Close your eyes, take slow, deep breaths, and feel yourself becoming centred in the present moment. As you breathe, visualise roots extending from the soles of your feet, burrowing deep into the earth, anchoring you to its steady energy. With each breath, imagine these roots drawing up the earth’s grounding energy, filling you with calm, stability, and balance.

Shadow Work & Journaling

Shadow work is a transformative practice that encourages deep self-reflection and growth. As you begin this journey, consider these prompts to help you explore and heal your inner shadows:

  • What fears hold me back from stepping into my power?
Delve into the fears that might be preventing you from fully embracing your potential. Are they rooted in past experiences or societal conditioning? Reflect on how these fears limit your ability to create the life you desire.

  • What limiting beliefs about magic or myself do I need to release?
Identify the beliefs that are holding you back from realising your true power—whether it’s doubts about your abilities or misconceptions about magic. Recognising and challenging these beliefs is a key step in your growth.

  • How can I embrace both my strengths and my flaws?
Shadow work isn’t just about confronting the “negative” parts of yourself, but also learning to love and accept your whole being. Reflect on how you can honour your strengths while acknowledging your flaws, allowing both to coexist without judgement.

Additionally, keeping a Book of Shadows or Grimoire is a wonderful way to document your spiritual journey and track your growth over time. This personal journal can be a space for you to explore and record:

  • Spells and rituals you’ve tried
Document your magical workings and the outcomes, allowing you to refine your practices and gain insights into what resonates with you.

  • Herbal and crystal correspondences
Record your experiences with different herbs and crystals, noting their effects on your energy and your practice, as well as any intuitive connections you may have.

  • Dreams and divination insights
Include your dreams, visions, or any divinatory practices you engage with, like tarot or runes. These often hold valuable messages from your subconscious or spiritual guides.

  • Reflections on your spiritual path
Reflect on your journey, any lessons you’ve learned, and how your beliefs or practices have evolved. This can serve as both a mirror and a roadmap for your ongoing spiritual growth.

By journaling in this way, you create a powerful record of your inner transformation and a space for deeper self-understanding.
