Am I Doing Witchcraft Right?
Witchy Wisdom for the Worried Beginner
You’ve lit a candle, whispered an intention, maybe even tried a spell or two—and now you’re sat there wondering: Am I doing this right?
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Nearly every witch—no matter how experienced—has asked that question. And here’s the truth: there is no one right way to be a witch.
Forget what the gatekeepers say. You don’t need a bookshelf of grimoires or a hundred-pound cauldron from Etsy to be valid. If you’ve shown up with honest intention, you’re already walking the path.
Start with Curiosity, Not Perfection
Witchcraft is a practice, not a performance. It’s not something you pass or fail. It’s a personal journey—and like any journey, it’ll be messy sometimes.
When you’re new, there’s so much noise: moon phases, herbs, crystals, deities, correspondences… it’s easy to feel lost. But take a breath. You don’t have to learn everything at once. In fact, you shouldn’t.
Let yourself be curious. Follow what lights you up. Make notes. Try things. Get things “wrong.” That’s how we learn.
If you’re pulled toward kitchen magic, start there. If you love being outdoors, follow a green witch path. If tarot calls to you more than herbs do, begin with the cards. There’s no prize for being the most well-rounded witch on day one.
Your Magic Is Yours
One of the most powerful things I ever learned was this: witchcraft adapts to you.
Your life, your culture, your resources, your beliefs—all of these shape your practice. If all you’ve got is a candle and your breath, that’s more than enough to work with. If your rituals happen in five-minute bursts between work and school runs, that’s still magic.
Don’t worry if your altar is just a shelf. Don’t worry if you don’t know what phase the moon is in. You are still a witch. You are still doing it right.
Write your own chants. Draw your own sigils. Use kitchen herbs instead of fancy botanicals. The most important tool in your craft is your belief—and that lives in you.
But What If I Make a Mistake?
You will. And it’s okay.
You’ll call something by the wrong name. You’ll forget a step. You’ll get distracted halfway through a spell and have to wing it. And none of that means you’re failing.
Intent matters far more than perfection. Magic flows through imperfection. The best spells I’ve ever done were the messy ones done in a rush, with a heartfelt need and a mismatched candle.
Spells gone a bit sideways often have the best stories attached to them—and honestly, some of the most effective results. The universe responds to raw emotion, not Pinterest aesthetics.
Am I Doing Witchcraft Right? Trust Yourself
You already have the most important ingredient in any magical practice: you.
Your instinct, your intuition, your lived experience. Those matter. You don’t need permission to begin. You don’t need a certificate. Just start. Keep going. Keep learning.
Your magic doesn’t need to look like mine, or anyone else’s. It just needs to feel like yours.
You’re not behind. You’re not wrong. You’re not too late.
You’re doing it.
And yes—you’re doing it right.
A Little Spell for Reassurance
Light a candle. Sit with it for a moment. Say this aloud or in your head:
I am enough. I am learning. I am growing.
My magic is real. My path is mine.
Blow out the candle if you wish. Or let it burn as long as you need.
