Apple & Blackberry Crumble for Mabon

Apple and blackberry crumble for Mabon on a witchy harvest altar

Apple & Blackberry Crumble for Mabon

As the days grow shorter and the hedgerows burst with fruit, Mabon invites us to reflect on balance, gratitude, and the turning of the wheel. This is the second harvest—a time of feasting, storing, and giving thanks for what the land provides.

Few things capture the spirit of an early autumn afternoon better than a bowl of warm crumble. Apples and blackberries are classic British fruits that ripen right around Mabon, making them the perfect offering for your sabbat table or post-ritual treat. This simple crumble celebrates abundance, groundedness, and the sweetness of the season.

🍏 The Magic of Apples & Blackberries

Apples are rich with symbolism in witchcraft, representing wisdom, healing, and the cycles of life and death. In Mabon rituals, they remind us of the fruit of our efforts—the literal and metaphorical harvests we gather in. Slice one crosswise and you’ll reveal a five-pointed star: the pentacle hidden at the heart of this sacred fruit.

Blackberries, meanwhile, are wild and protective. In folklore, they were once considered taboo after Michaelmas, as it was said the Devil spat on them after being cast from heaven. But during Mabon, they’re still sweet, ripe, and bursting with that wild Earth magic. Use them to honour the spirit of the land, the turning of the season, and your connection to nature.

🧹 A Mabon Kitchen Ritual

This crumble is more than just dessert. Preparing it can be a quiet kitchen ritual: a moment of gratitude for all that you’ve gathered and achieved. Stir with intention. Sprinkle with love. Offer a spoonful to the land, or simply eat mindfully, giving thanks for the simple joys of the harvest.

📝 Ingredients

For the topping:

  • 120g plain flour

  • 60g caster sugar

  • 60g unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into pieces

For the fruit base:

  • 300g Braeburn apples, peeled, cored, and diced

  • 30g unsalted butter

  • 30g demerara sugar

  • 115g fresh blackberries

  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon

  • Vanilla ice cream or custard, to serve (optional but delightful)

🥣 Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 190°C (170°C fan) / Gas 5. Line a baking tray.

  2. In a mixing bowl, rub the butter into the flour and caster sugar until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Don’t overwork it.

  3. Spread the crumble topping on a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden. This step keeps your crumble extra crisp!

  4. While it bakes, make the compote. In a pan, melt the demerara sugar and butter over medium heat. Cook for 3 minutes until it becomes a light caramel.

  5. Stir in the diced apples, cooking for 3 minutes. Then add the blackberries and cinnamon, and cook for a further 3 minutes.

  6. Remove from the heat, cover the pan, and let the fruit rest for a few minutes to absorb the warmth and flavours.

  7. Spoon the fruit into an ovenproof dish, top with the baked crumble, and return to the oven for 5–10 minutes until hot and fragrant.

  8. Serve warm, with ice cream or custard if desired. For extra witchy flair, whisper a blessing over your bowl.

🌾 Make It Magical

  • Add oats or chopped hazelnuts to your crumble for extra crunch and abundance magic.

  • Stir intentions of balance, gratitude, or transformation into your fruit compote.

  • Leave an offering of the first spoonful to the spirits of the land or your household spirits.

Final Thoughts
