Samhain Intentions – Reflect, Release & Manifest

As the leaves fall and the air turns crisp, we approach Samhain — the sacred threshold into winter and the Witchs New Year. This liminal time invites stillness, honesty, and renewal. By crafting clear Samhain Intentions, we honour the past year, release what no longer serves, and step into the dark half with purpose and protection.

Why Set Samhain Intentions?

In the old Celtic calendar, Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the inward season. The veil thins; ancestors draw near; the land exhales and rests. Setting Samhain Intentions aligns your craft with this natural descent — a promise to tend your inner hearth while the world sleeps. Think of it as spiritual wintering: conserving energy, choosing what to keep, and letting go of the rest.

Step 1: Reflect on Your Year’s Harvest

Before you write any goals, name your harvest. What ripened? What withered? Reflection is powerful magic.

  • What did I learn? Name three lessons that changed your path.
  • What can I release? Habits, fears, or patterns you no longer wish to carry.
  • What deserves tending? Skills, relationships, or practices you want to deepen.

Jot answers in your journal or your Book of Shadows. If you keep an ancestor altar, tell your forebears what you’ve learned — the conversation itself is a blessing.

Step 2: Write Clear Samhain Intentions

Strong intentions are simple, specific, and seasonal. Use present-tense, heart-led words. Aim for 3–5 Samhain Intentions you can realistically nourish over winter.

  • “I keep a weekly divination date and record my insights.”
  • “I cleanse and ward my home each month with rosemary and salt.”
  • “I study lunar magic and track cycles until Imbolc.”

Tip: Pair each intention with a supportive action (a time, place, or tool). Winter loves rhythm.

Step 3: A Simple Samhain Intention Ritual

Create a calm space — kitchen table, hearth, or outdoor nook. This short rite roots your Samhain Intentions in the season’s power.

  • Gather: One black candle (protection), one orange candle (renewal), paper and pen, a sprig of rosemary, and a small bowl of salt or black salt.
  • Cleanse: Pass your hands through rosemary smoke or sprinkle a little salt. Breathe out the old year.
  • Light: Black candle first (warding the space), then orange (welcoming new fire).
  • Write: List your Samhain Intentions. Read them aloud to your ancestors or guides.
  • Seal: Fold the paper toward you, tie with thread, and place beneath your candle holder or on your altar through November.
  • Close: Thank the spirits and snuff the candles (never blow). Keep the packet in your journal until Imbolc.

Step 4: Release What You’re Done With

Write what you’re releasing on separate slips (one per habit or worry). Safely burn them in a fireproof dish, or bury them at the base of a tree. As the smoke rises or earth closes, say: “I release this into the dark to be transformed.” Pair this act with a cup of tea, soup, or bread — nourishment anchors magic.

Tools to Support Your Intentions

Lancashire Roots & Winter Rhythm

Here in Lancashire, stories tell of lanterns on the hills and hearthside blessings at Hallowtide. Honour the land as you set Samhain Intentions: place a Pendle pebble on your altar, hang a sprig of rowan by the door, or walk sunwise around your home with a candle — a quiet nod to the old ways of warding and welcome.

Keep Your Magic Moving

Intentions thrive with simple structure. Choose a recurring check-in — new moon, first Sunday, or every tea-and-journal morning. When an intention feels complete, note the harvest and either deepen it or gently let it rest until spring.

Conclusion: Step into the Witchs New Year

Samhain Intentions are less about pressure and more about presence. They help you meet winter as an ally — a cocoon for study, healing, and quiet spellwork. May your choices be kind, your wards be strong, and your inner fire steady as the year turns. Happy Witchs New Year — may your path be protected and your purpose clear.

Blessed be.
