What Do I Really Believe in as a Green Witch?

When people hear the word “witch,” their imaginations often run wild, fuelled by centuries of stories, myths, and misunderstandings. One common misconception is that witches worship the devil. So, let’s clear that up straight away: No, I do not worship the devil. In fact, I don’t even believe in such a being. The concept of the devil and hell is, in my view, a human invention, crafted as a tool of control. It’s a fear mechanism designed to keep people obedient within the structures of organised religion.

As a witch, my beliefs are quite different. They are rooted in a reverence for the natural world rather than devotion to any specific deity. I find the Old Gods and Goddesses utterly fascinating—the ancient deities that were once revered by people who understood the importance of living in harmony with nature. These pantheons reflect something deeply human: the need to connect with the cycles of the Earth and to seek its favour for sustenance, health, and safety. There’s an authenticity in that relationship, something that feels far more real to me than the doctrines of modern, organised religions.

Do I worship these Old Gods and Goddesses? Not exactly. I love learning about them and enjoy the stories and symbols they embody, but I don’t worship them in the traditional sense. Instead, I honour the Earth, the moon, the seasons, and the forces of nature itself. These are the powers that sustain life. To me, the Earth is sacred, and paying respect to it feels instinctive—like a way to express gratitude for the home, food, and comfort it provides.

I am also drawn to certain symbols, especially the imagery of the Triple Moon and the Triple Goddess. These represent the stages of life—maiden, mother, and crone—and I believe these phases deserve recognition, not as divine entities, but as expressions of life’s journey. Symbols like these help me connect with and honour these transitions, from growth to maturity to wisdom.

That being said, plenty of witches do worship gods and goddesses, and I respect that path. They find strength and guidance in these beings, and for many, it is a central part of their practice. I’m not closed off to the idea myself. If one of these gods or goddesses ever called to me, I’d be open to it. But for now, I feel fulfilled in my connection with the Earth and the cycles of the natural world.

So, what do I believe in as a witch? I believe in the power of nature, in the balance of the Earth, and in the wisdom of life’s cycles. By honouring the world around me, I believe I am paying respect to something much larger than myself—something real, tangible, and that has sustained humanity for millennia. That’s where my path lies, for now at least. And that’s more than enough for me.
